Market Watch Top 10: OCG Influences

As Regional Qualifiers started to wind down stateside, Japanese product previews and the reveal of the OCG's next F&L List made an impact on the TCGplayer Marketplace.

While current OCG metagames appear to be pretty healthy and varied week to week , the new F&L List seems to work to preserve that careful balance, while bringing other strategies into the mix… Including a few getting support from upcoming releases. The new Advanced Format curbs SPYRALs with a Limit to SPYRAL Resort, and a carryover of the TCG's Limits on SPYRAL Quik-Fix and SPYRAL GEAR – Drone. It even Forbids Ancient Fairy Dragon, though that may have had more to do with the want to let players have two copies of Set Rotation, now Semi-Limited.

But other big strategies saw few or no further hits, leaving the bulk of the changes to individual balances and a needed restriction on Token-driven cards like Dandylion, Scapegoat, and Blackwing – Steam the Cloak. Amongst the big winners were Nekroz, Monarchs, and Elemental Lords, at least two of which are now confirmed to get big support in January's Flames of Destruction.

In fact, the unveiling of sixteen new cards from FLOD was another big factor guiding the secondary market this week, sparking immediate interest in Elemental Lords and Nekroz. We'll get to those cards as we work our way closer to the Number 1 bestseller this week, but first, let's start with a continued winner here in TCG territories.

#10: Purple Poison Magician

Pendulum Magicians have been a hot ticket since the deck's recovering performance at YCS Buenos Aires and the reveal of Heavymetalfoes Electrumite last week, the latter now slated for the TCG version of Extreme Force. The enthusiasm continued through this week, with Magicians taking no fewer than three spots in the Top 10, starting with the ever-popular Purple Poison Magician.

#9: Soul Charge

Next up, Soul Charge remains a big seller after its reprinting in Structure Deck: Cyberse Link, a staple for numerous competitive decks in tournaments today, and a popular pick for hot fan-favorites like Six Samurai. It's one of the most powerful spells ever printed, and even though it's Limited it continues to see widespread sales that transcend speculation, hitting a wide audience of people who apparently didn't own their copy (or copies) until now.

#8: Black Fang Magician

Black Fang Magician might be the one Pendulum Magician that players often skimp on by running just two copies, but that trend seems to be fading over time. We're seeing it sell in impressive numbers, and as Magicians score more Regional Top 8's triple Black Fang keeps getting more and more common.

#7: Solemn Strike

The deadly Counter Trap's been a mainstay of our Top 10 countdowns for weeks, and even in the era of Go-Second SPYRALs there are still lots of players aiming to go first that are using it to help protect their Turn 1 investment. There's not much to say here - Solemn Strike's an amazing card, and as long as it isn't Limited it's likely to see a lot of play.

#6: Windrose the Elemental Lord

The new Elementsaber cards revealed in Flames of Destruction all have a variety of supporting effects to help you Summon and make the most of the old Elemental Lord monsters, and heightened demand for all four Elemental Lords manifested as massive sales for the most accessible of the bunch. Pyrorex the Elemental Lord is currently about $2.50; Grandosoil the Elemental Lord is nearly $5; and the mighty Moulinglacia the Elemental Lord was bought out and now sits at just below $20. Each was only available as a Secret Rare so far in just one printing.

Meanwhile Windrose the Elemental Lord has never seen competitive play, and it's been printed twice – first in Lord of the Tachyon Galaxy and then again in the 2014 Mega Pack. While Windrose was a Secret Rare as well, it's still in the highest supply with the lowest demand, and that meant a price point that was less than 25 cents. Seeing the possibilities of the new support in FLOD, it was an easy buy for players at any budget level.

It hasn't sold out yet, but copies are flying and there are only a few pages of listings left. It'll be interesting to see if it gets pushed into a buyout some time over the weekend.

#5: Double Iris Magician

One of the most important of the Pendulum Magician monsters, there's no mystery why Double Iris Magician was the bestseller of the lot. With solid stats, a high scale, and an effect that can combo with other abilities to make OTK's, it's always been a three-of for Pendulum Magician players.

#4: Proxy Dragon

Solemn Strike, Proxy Dragon, and Pot of Desires are all so important to so many strategies that those three cards make the Top 10 more weeks than not. Demand for Proxy Dragon continued to be strong, as one of the chief enablers of Link Summoning strategies. If you're playing a deck that wants to field more than one Extra Deck monster at a time, you're probably running at least one Proxy, often two.

#3: The Winged Dragon of Ra – Sphere Mode

The Number 1 bestseller in our Monday Market Watch, The Winged Dragon of Ra – Sphere Mode continued to be a huge mover in the wake of its Special Edition reprint. At a time when Kaiju and Lava Golem have risen to prominence to break fields and stop monsters like SPYRAL Sleeper, Sphere Mode is a slightly more risky option that offers bigger wards – namely the chance to wipe out your opponent's entire field instead of just one or two monsters.

Formerly a $12-$13 Ultra Rare in Duelist Pack: Battle City, it's now available for three bucks as a Super Rare, and that's brought it into the budget range of thousands of competitors. And while this is assuredly a competitive trend, you can't ignore the casual appeal of the converted God Card either; some of this demand is likely from fans of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! TV series who can finally snag a few copies without breaking the bank.

What happened beyond the Top 10? Number 41: Bagooska the Terribly Tired Tapir took the Number 11 spot with widespread sales, narrowly missing the Top 10. That was likely tied to the continued enthusiasm for Magicians, at least in part.

We also saw big niche interest from specualtors in both Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz and Nekroz of Unicore, which sold tons of copies in the wake of the OCG's announcement that Shurit will become Semi-Limited on January 1 st.

Beyond that the big winners were largely speculative outliers: stuff like Astrograph Sorcerer and Zoodiac Bunnyblast make sense, since while neither card is big in competition now, each has seen some success this format and packs a high enough power level to have a future under the right conditions. Other speculative picks, like The Golden Apples and Raidraptor – Last Strix, were a bit more individualized.

That's it for this week, but we'll be back on Monday with another Top 10, following up on the final Regional Qualifiers of 2017. See you then!
