Market Watch Top 10: An Abyss Actor On Top?

Regionals are still a ways off, but we saw a few big shifts in the TCGplayer Marketplace this week. Looking at the Top 10 bestselling cards from Monday to Friday, new trends confirmed that collectors are still speculating on the OCG success of Pendulum Magicians. Meanwhile several tech cards that have yet to see major play this format rose to prominence, as duelists look to get ahead of the game in the new year.

The result was a mish mash Top 10 of splahable standbys, longshot tech choices, and a new Number 1 that we saw hints of in our previous Market Watch on Friday. Yes, the hottest Abyss Actor in the OCG scene is suddenly outpacing Pot of Desires and… everything else in the Marketplace.

More on that later. But first, let's kick off the countdown with an old competitive favorite.

#10: Effect Veiler

Effect Veiler has lost pace to comparable hand traps of escalating power, as cards like Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit and Ghost Reaper & Winter Cherries have long replaced it. But Veiler sold a ton of copies this week, with the its Link Strike reprint making it even easier to speculate on. Don't be fooled: Effect Veiler's never been bad. It's just not the right tool for the job, for now.

#9: Link Spider

Once again clocking in at Number 9, Link Spider's wildly convenient for Link climbing and converting Tokens into more applicable Link Materials. There's not much to say; if you're playing competitive Yu-Gi-Oh! you're going to need Link Spider, and the sustained demand may just indicate a steady stream of new players entering the competitive arena.

The fact that decks often play Link Spider in multiples also helps to explain the demand. Still, it's one of those cards where it begs the question: who didn't own Link Spider yet?

#8: Solemn Strike

Hot like a parked car ever since its reprint in Code of the Duelist: Special Edition, Solemn Strike has been seeing recent play partly in reaction to the uptick in popularity of Go-Second decks. Now that Trickstars and True Dracos are getting in on the Go-Second action, Solemn Strike may be even more important. The duality of the coin flip in this format really is an amazing shift in competition.

#7: Astrograph Sorcerer

As far as the TCG is concerned, Astrograph Sorcerer was the only Pendulum Magician card that made the Top 10 this week. But as for the OCG…Well, more on that later.

Monster Effect : If a card(s) you control is destroyed by battle or card effect: You can Special Summon this card from your hand, then you can choose 1 monster in the Graveyard, Extra Deck, or that is banished, and that was destroyed this turn, and add 1 monster with the same name from your Deck to your hand. You can banish this card you control, plus 4 monsters from your hand, field, and/or Graveyard (1 each with "Pendulum Dragon", "Xyz Dragon", "Synchro Dragon", and "Fusion Dragon" in their names); Special Summon 1 "Supreme King Z-ARC" from your Extra Deck. #6: Zombie World

In a surprising spike, Zombie World rushed out of nowhere straight to the Number 6 spot. The reason? The reveal of Vampire Sucker, a new Link 2 Zombie from Flames of Destruction that combos with Zombie World to let you tribute all of your opponent's monsters for your Tribute Summons. It's also got a sweet combination of effects that lets you force your opponent to revive monsters and then draws you free cards for them, so it's kinda nuts all around.

#5: Gold Sarcophagus

Selling like hotcakes since its big comeback a month ago, Gold Sarcophagus is played in 60-Card decks to instantly Special Summon Giant Rex, and to put power cards like Soul Charge and That Grass Looks Greener on layaway. One part combo piece and one part generic searcher, it's a flexible card that's cool to see reborn in competition today.

#1: Abyss Actor – Curtain Raiser

Newly popularized in the OCG as a key piece of the Supreme King and regular variants of the Pendulum Magician deck, where it's a self-Summoning Level 4 Material or beatstick, and a valuable combo piece. We saw a push for several Abyss Actors outside the Top 10 over the weekend, but now that myriad of cards coalesced into one big push for the single standout in overseas tournaments.

Will Abyss Actor – Curtain Raiser become relevant here in the TCG? That remains to be seen, as key cards for the deck are still waiting in the wings here stateside. But there were certainly enough people looking to make the bet that it will be. We'll see how long the trend lasts.

What else was big this week? Missus Radiant, Skull Meister, and Number 41: Bagooska the Terribly Tired Tapir all fell just short of making the Top 10. Meanwhile Purple Poison Magician and Harmonizing Magician were in the same boat, continuing to demonstrate the elevated demand for Pendulum Magicians.

Big speculative picks this week included Ebon High Magician, Super Rejuvenation, and Typhoon. We'll have to see where those trends are headed on Monday.

Until then, Happy New Year! We'll be back next week with the first look at the TCGplayer Top 10 of 2018.
