Market Watch Top 10: Staples, Magicians, and F.A. Fallout

Our latest Monday Market Watch saw a massive swerve, as buyers reacted to the reveal of the four new F.A. cards in Extreme Force.

Four days later, most of that momentum has disappeared now that hundreds of copies of existing F.A. cards have been sold – most of them to buyers ordering just a playset, suggesting they're actual players looking to run the theme when EXFO hits shelves. Those sales died down over the course of the week, though one big card for the theme remained in high demand, after roughly tripling in price.

Beyond that it was another big week for Pendulum Magicians, as they returned to fill the gap left by the retreating F.A. cards. Not only were a number of consistent performers big from the theme, one of the deck's biggest all-stars is finally on a long-awaited upward Price Trend, which drove massive demand this week.

From there we saw a repeat performance from an offbeat hit a week ago, as well as driving demand for two of the format's biggest staples. Let's get right into it, and look at the Top 10 bestselling cards in the TCGplayer Marketplace this week, from Monday to Friday!

#10: Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer

Once played as a singleton in Pendulum Magicians, Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer's become a two-of in almost every build and has even started seeing use in triplicate. Both the Breakers of Shadow original and the CT13 Super Rare are now on rising Price Trends, with both cards on fewer than two pages of stock in the Marketplace.

Monster Effect : If this card is Special Summoned: You can target up to 2 cards you control; destroy them, and if you do, add "Performapal" monsters with different names from your Deck to your hand, except "Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer", equal to the number of cards destroyed. You can only use this effect of "Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer" once per turn.

#9: Black Fang Magician

On the other hand, Black Fang Magician was on a slight downward Price Trend this weeks, slipping to an average Market Price of about 60 cents. It always makes more sense when other, more important Magician cards run as three-ofs outsell Black Fang Magician, since players often run just two copies.

#8: Harmonizing Magician

Harmonizing Magician saw a similar level of action, beating out Black Fang Magician by just a few copies for the week with a similar number of orders. Again, that makes the demand for Black Fang a little surprising given Harmonizing Magician's status as a must-run at three.

#7: Marshalling Field

Meanwhile Marshalling Field just kept on selling like hotcakes, even as demand for other F.A. cards died down. Unlike the F.A. name-stamped commons, Marshalling Field is a foil card from a relatively scarce special booster release, and that meant lower supply as well as a strong imperative driving players to get their copies now, before a potential price spike.

That spike happened this week, as Marshalling Field roughly tripled in value. And while that only meant a three dollar price tag, there were fewer than 60 copies left on TCGplayer as of this writing, half of which was controlled by a single vendor. Whether more copies will come out of the woodwork to replace copies sold before the price can rise even higher is up in the air, but with hundreds of sales the past week, we might find out the answer to that question in the next few days.

#6: Oracle of Zefra

The key Field Spell for Zefras saw enough sales to raise some suspicions of at least minor speculation this week, as Zefras continued to do exceedingly well in OCG tournaments overseas. While the use of Oracle for Set Rotation has died down stateside, it's a three-of for actual Zefra decks, and a couple near-miss showings in recent TCG tournaments have helped to bridge the link between the successful OCG builds and the market here in North America.

Both the reprint and the original are still in neutral price territory for the moment, but it's unclear if demand will rise, or fall off through the weekend.

#5: Purple Poison Magician

You can't Pendulum Magician very hard without Purple Poison Magician, but like Black Fang Magician, it's riding a slight downward price trend. Regardless, sales for Pendulum Magicians are up roughly 40% from where they were in early December, including Purple Poison.

#4: Double Iris Magician

Meanwhile nearly at the top of the heap for Pendulums, Double Iris Magician remains one of the deck's strongest sellers. Searching the deck's key Continuous cards, it's a massively important play starter that gets everything else rolling, while creating win scenarios with its damage buff. It's one of the most flexible cards in the Pendulum Magician arsenal, and it's never a surprise to see it this high in the Top 10.

#2: Proxy Dragon

…Proxy Dragon! Demand for Proxy Dragon is actually substantially down this month from where it was in December, but that didn't stop it from being the Number 2 bestselling card in the Marketplace this week. Still available for less than a buck, Proxy's a must-own that's become ubiquitous in almost all strategies. If you're playing competitive Yu-Gi-Oh, you need to have Proxy Dragon or your options are severely limited. The sustained demand for a card most players only run one copy of continues to speak well for the influx of new players taking up competitive dueling.

#1: Astrograph Sorcerer

And finally, Astrograph Sorcerer sold like hotcakes this week. Finally hitting an upward Price Trend, its average Market Price the past few days was $3.78 as of this writing and available copies are starting at $4 and up. There are just over 300 copies left in the TCGplayer Marketplace, and with sales the way they were this past week that could mean a potential buyout in a matter of days.

If that happens, we could easily see Astrograph Sorcerer settle at the six dollar mark given the price of current stock. Will demand for Astrograph Sorcerer hold out under the pressure of rising prices? Will that potential for growth create more speculation, or spur more players onward to buy their playsets? We'll have to wait and see.

Beyond the Top 10, the bestselling cards from Number 11 to Number 15 were all Pendulum Magician cards: Wavering Eyes, Time Pendulumgraph, Duelist Alliance, Star Pendulumgraph, and Supreme King Gate Zero.

The giant push we saw for Chronograph Sorcerer last week dropped off almost completely, but Magicians continue to be the hottest point of interest in the secondary market. With recent tournament results in the TCG showing stability for the theme, huge successes in the OCG – especially for new variants, and Extreme Force just around the corner with the much-awaited Heavymetalfoes Electrumite, there are a lot of strong push factors keeping Magicians moving.

Join us on Monday to see where the action is headed, in our next Market Watch.
