Market Watch Top 10: YCS San Jose Aftermath

The YCS in San Jose showed huge numbers for Pendulum Magicians and True Dracos; while Trickstars took only two spots in the Top 32, True Dracos captured a whopping 10, delivering on the heavy enthusiasm we saw in the TCGPlayer Marketplace running up to the event.

Meanwhile Lightsworn Zombies took two seats in the Top Cut, and World Chalice, Mekk-Knight Invoked, and Cubic OTK each took a Top 32 spot as well. The deck that won it all was a Pendulum Magician build, but it was an innovative version packing a big suite of Mythical Beast cards, triple Abyss Actor - Curtain Raiser, and zero copies of Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm and Supreme King Gate Zero. YCS San Jose did a lot to contribute to the development of current competition.

…But, deck lists were slow to emerge from the YCS weekend, and they're still trickling in. The secondary market didn't seem to show much of a reaction Sunday night, with the leading factor in sales patterns once again being the release of Legendary Collection Kaiba.

We'll likely see some responses to the influence of YCS San Jose in our next market Watch on Friday, but for now, here are the Top 10 bestsellers from the weekend.

#10: Effect Veiler

Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, still expensive; Effect Veiler, still the best alternative. As long as Ash Blossom remains one of the biggest money cards in the format, and as long as hand traps remain popular, Veiler will command a lot of interest.

But the ubiquity of hand traps is something we can no longer take for granted; True Dracos are on the rise , and YCS San Jose winner Adrian Madriz Espinoza didn't Main Deck any , opting to Side Deck just one Ash Blossom and three Ghost Reaper & Winter Cherries. Keep an eye on trends moving forward; there are plenty of strategies that are largely skipping on hand traps topping events.

#9: Sage with Eyes of Blue

Blue-Eyes White Dragon support from Legendary Collection Kaiba are some of the hottest cards in the set, Rekindling a ton of casual and fan interest in the BEWD strategy. Sage with Eyes of Blue is a must-run in most builds, and five bucks for a stunning Secret Rare version is clearly too good to pass up for a lot of TCGplayer shoppers. It was enough to keep Sage at Number 9.

#8: Trade-In

We're at least a couple years removed from Trade-In as a viable tournament pick, but the classic “draw 2” spell triggers a ton of nostalgia in more than just Blue-Eyes White Dragon fans, and it's been known to reappear in tournament play from time to time. With eight previous printings, only two of which were foil and none of which were Secret Rare or higher, it's easy to understand the enthusiasm for the LCKC version as Trade-In finally gets its blinged up due.

#7: Link Spider

Even though Link Spider's a tough sell for the two biggest strategies in tournaments, it's still big in just about everything else, from Trickstars on down. Still, with Link Spider at Number 7 and Proxy Dragon gone from the Top 10 at least momentarily, we may be seeing a settling of Link Monster demand; at some point, everybody's just got the well worn basics.

#6: The White Stone of Ancients

#5: Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm

Darkwurm didn't feature in the winning Pendulum deck from YCS San Jose, but for now, there wasn't enough time for the marketplace to see that and then react. Darkwurm remained one of the hottest cards in the game through the weekend, but we'll have to see if its popularity's impacted in our next Market Watch. We might see lower enthusiasm for Darkwurm and more interest in Mythical Beast Master Cerberus, Mythical Beast Jackal King, and Mythical Beast Bashilisk by Friday.

#4: The Melody of Awakening Dragon

A must-run at three in almost any Blue-Eyes White Dragon deck imaginable, The Melody of Awakening Dragon's drawn praise for being one of the best looking Secret Rares in recent memory, bolstering its position as a must-own for Blue-Eyes fans. It's up from Number 6 last week, as market interest is actually increasing.

#3: Return of the Dragon Lords

Clocking in at Number 3 for a straight week now, Return of the Dragon Lords was actually an alarmingly expensive card when it first released; it was regularly in the five to six dollar range right off the bat and has largely stayed there, driving Structure Deck: Rise of the True Dragons way above MSRP and often into buyout territory.

There are very few copies of the Secret Rare left in the TCGplayer marketplace, and while the current average Market Price was $6.40 as of this writing, the lowest available copies are already in the $10+ range. Even as more LCKC product's being opened and driving down prices of other cards in the set, Return of the Dragon Lords is remaining very scarce.

#1: Pot of Desires

And finally, Pot of Desires dominated the salescharts for yet another week! While the Market Price is still $4, available copies are now $6 and higher after shipping, so if we don't see a major push of supply over the next few days that long-forecasted price spike could finally be upon us.

The Secret Rare original was recently bought out, more than doubling its price overnight. We'll check back Friday to see if that trend sticks.

We'll see you then.
