Market Watch Top 10: The Run-Up To YCS Salt Lake City

Welcome back! Last weekend an innovative Pendulum Magician deck won YCS San Jose in Costa Rica, and tomorrow YCS action arrives in Salt Lake City for the first time ever.

At the same time, Legendary Collection Kaiba continues to drive massive sales in the TCGplayer Marketplace and beyond. Monday's Market Watch showed only minimal responses over the weekend to YCS San Jose, and the mild reactions continued throughout the week. In fact, some of our Top 10 bestsellers throughout the week run entirely counter to the results from the YCS, suggesting some big reads for Salt Lake City this weekend.

With no further ado, let's dive right into the Top 10 and take a look at the bestselling cards from Monday to Friday this week, by volume of cards sold.

#10: Soul Charge

Soul Charge isn't a common bestseller, but it's seeing more table time in tournaments these days in decks like 60-Card Zombie and 60-Card Dinosaur variants. 60-Card decks run so many cards to take advantage of That Grass Looks Greener, so they run lots of ways to send cards to the graveyard; it sets them up really well to leverage Soul Charge.

In addition, the use of triple Left Arm Offering to search for Greener leaves the deck with a need for alternate power cards to search out when you already have That Grass Looks Greener and draw a would-be-dead Left Arm. Soul Charge fills that need as well, making 60-Card strategies more consistent over the long term in tournament play.

All that suggests we may see more 60-Card decks this weekend, and in the weeks that follow. Watch out for them in your tournaments.

#9: Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm

The winning Pendulum Magician deck from YCS San Jose was interesting in that it actually didn't run Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm, despite the ubiquity of that card in Pendulums prior to the YCS. Still, buyers in the TCGplayer Marketplace didn't seem to care; Darkwurm made the Top 10 yet again, suggesting conventional Pendulum Magician decks are as popular as ever, even in the wake of that innovative win.

#8: Sage with Eyes of Blue

The Blue-Eyes White Dragon hype has been entirely real ever since the release of Legendary Collection Kaiba, and while it's slowed down in the past few days – largely due to lack of supply, as sealed Kaiba product has disappeared basically everywhere – demand for key foil upgrades is still strong. Sage with Eyes of Blue was essentially a must-run in any tournament-topping BEWD deck in the past, and that's made it a popular card since its reprinting.

#7: Proxy Dragon

While many decks are running fewer Link Monsters than before, the Link-2 position remains massively popular, with Proxy Dragon and Underclock Taker appearing in a wide range of strategies. With 2017 Tins long gone, the only way for returning players to get Proxy Dragon is to pick it up on the secondary market, and it's been a popular pick for months as lapsed duelists make their way back to the game for the WCQ season.

#6: Dragon Revival Rhapsody

Invoked variants continue to do exceedingly well in tournaments as a successful rogue pick, with and without Mekk-Knights, and Dragon Revival Rhapsody allows for a powerful new variant keying off Dragons. Doug's talked quite a bit about the potential in that mashup, though we've yet to see it manifest in competition.

That could just be a matter of time, but whether a new Invoked variant materializes or not, the latest Kaiba power-card is a hit with both casual duelists and well prepared competitors looking to future proof their collections.

#4: Metaverse

Metaverse seems to spike every now and then whenever the fear of a Terraforming Limit reaches a fever pitch, and with Field Spells still being immensely popular after the nerf of SPYRALs there's still a strong camp that believes Terraforming is going to get whacked in the TCG, perhaps sooner than later. It was interesting to see that this wasn't just a speculative trend this week, but actually pretty widespread.

#3: Underclock Taker

Underclock Taker's become one of the highest selling cards of the year so far, with ubiquity rivalling Proxy Dragon but with a far more recent release date. It's a must-run in most Link spam decks, it's a go-to in decks that are lighter on Links but still want to play a few, and it's still practically free. That all adds up to a wildly popular card week to week.

#2: Effect Veiler

Just like last week, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring has yet to plunge in value as many believed it would off the reprinting in Legendary Collection Kaiba. That's created consistently high demand for Effect Veiler as a second-best pick. Unlike last week, more players are running Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring together with Veiler and topping events like Regional Qualifiers.

While Veiler's been part of the dueling arsenal of veteran competitors for years, there's an entire generation of duelists for whom it wasn't relevant until now, and they're picking up the convenient precon reprints from last year in droves.

#1: Pot of Desires

And finally, the sheer volume of Pot of Desires sold continues to suggest that more players are entering and returning to the game in preparation for the World Championship Qualifier series, and at the same time, that trends this week weren't big enough to beat the “Pot of Desires index” as many are starting to see it. Demand is so consistent for Pot of Desires that when cards outsell it, we know there are big trends going on, while the weeks where it's Number 1 tend to represent fewer shifts and adaptations in the Marketplace.

And that's it for this week! Hit us up on Monday, when we're sure to see a few early shakeups in the wake of YCS Salt Lake City.

Responses to YCS San Jose were mild in the secondary market, but with lots of Yugitubers bound to be present and creating deck profiles this weekend, information will spread faster, and that's going to mean a bigger reaction. Good luck to everybody heading to Utah, and we'll check back to see the impact of that Championship on Monday.
