I try not to hinge all my affinity for a card on the external, but wow does Serpentine Princess haunt my dreams. Plain and simple, it's one of the strangest cards in Yu-Gi-Oh. The Reptile-type is sorely underrepresented in Yu-Gi-Oh – it's one of the worst types out there – and the Princess' stats and Water attribute don't help either. Serpentine Princess' effect is so hard to trigger that for the longest time, Monster Recovery was the best option off very short list of potential triggers.

But neither the creature's bizarre face nor its difficult-to-use effect could stop today's submitter from going all out. Dan D. from Cork, Ireland writes...

I hope this submission finds you well as this deck has not found me well. It's not an easy task to make a deck using Serpentine Princess, but I will try. Very few cards actually work with Serpentine Princess, and I considered using Liberty at Last! Turns out, that trap is useless. It's too difficult to use.

Fusion Tag and Serpentine Princess are the two main combo pieces. Have you considered using Summoner Monk for the deck? If you haven't, maybe think about it! Even though you haven't read the deck yet! Take that! Try to do something with it that's respectable.

-Dan D. ~ Cork, Ireland

Gladiator Beasts can be really fun, but I'll admit I've never really used Serpentine Princess. I think I once thought about kinda maybe using the card? Once? Maybe?

…Sounds like something I would do, but I'm also worried that I actually considered it in the first place.

When we finally get the Link Gladiator Beast in the TCG, I'll be happy.

Until that day, I guess I'll be sad...

I Have Many Ideas For GB Cards But No One Asks Me
I don't mean to complain too much, but geez is this card hard to trigger in a standard deck. Arguably the easiest way to use Serpentine Princess is to power through with Shuffle Reborn. I'm probably the world's biggest fan of that card, and even I wasn't happy thinking of that, and I'm disappointed that Shuffle Reborn wasn't in the original submission.

What Dan decided to do has merit and can be leveraged in some unique ways. Fusion Tag fills a strange gap in certain decks that I never realized existed. Equipping Fusion Tag onto Serpentine Princess means you can easily summon Gladiator Beast Gaiodiaz, Gladiator Beast Gyzarus, Gladiator Beast Heraklinos, and Gladiator Beast Andabata; then, Serpentine Princess Summons any a Level 3 or lower monster from your deck!

As neat as that is, it turns out you can summon all of those monsters relatively easily anyway. Virtually every Gladiator Beast deck ever has played Gladiator Beast Laquari and Gladiator Beast Bestiari, so Gladiator Beast Gyzarus and Gladiator Beast Heraklinos aren't that far away. Gladiator Beast Andabata's already a hassle in and of itself, and Gladiator Beast Gaiodiaz is outclassed by Gokipon and Snapesnatch.

The other way Dan used Serpentine Princess was with Compulsory Escape Device, and I think that's a bit slow as well. Unless you can wait until your turn to spring the trap on your opponent, you'll be throwing whatever monster Princess fetches onto the field for easy pickings by your opponent.

It isn't a bad idea to try and slowly roll through the duel with a heavy defensive trap line-up, but Gladiator Beasts are weak monsters in a vacuum and don't compare to a lot of heavy hitters in competition today. Since Gladiator Beasts depend on “tagging out” in the Battle Phase after an attack, you'll need an extra layer of protection to use them on your opponent's turn.

Using Compulsory Escape Device to return a Serpentine Princess to your hand may net you a Gladiator Beast Murmillo, but that new fish is susceptible to battle and card effects. You may have broken even in card economy, but it's a lot of effort to accomplish a task that can be achieved through so many easier ways.

I think most of what you're trying to accomplish in Gladiator Beasts is better accomplished in other decks like Chain Beat, the long forgotten strategy hinging on Wind-Up Rabbit and Black Garden. Even that deck has fallen by the wayside largely in part due to Link Summoning, so I'll instead turn our back to the Gladiator Beasts.

Seriously, I Have Lots of Ideas For Gladiator Beast Cards
Fusion Tag would be a lot more useful if we had better targets, and I will say if you're really feeling crazy, you can make Fusion Tag work by leveraging Odd-Eyes Venom Dragon. Sure, you'd have to use an Odd-Eyes monster and then turn a monster you control into Starving Venom Fusion Dragon with Fusion Tag. It sounds outlandish, but if you really set your mind to it, the most difficult part of that set-up would be drawing Fusion Tag.

Maybe not the most consistent plan, though…

Instead, I'd like to rely on an old favorite. You can't really ditch Fusion Tag completely, but focusing on the slow churn with 100 different ways to use Serpentine Princess will make for messy and unreliable hands.

After all, you have to make the Gladiator Beast portion of the deck viable. I've written about Gladiator Beasts a few times in the past, but I don't always include Elemental Hero Prisma preferentially, but that's going to change today.

Elemental Hero Prisma's nice because you can get it on the field without using your Normal Summon, send Gladiator Beast Bestiari to the graveyard, and you're any Normal Summon away from Gladiator Beast Gyzarus. Simply contact fuse the two away, blow up cards, make your opponent cry - all in a day's work. Prisma also works with other Gladiator Beast Fusions, but more importantly it ensures you'll have monsters in your graveyard - specifically Gladiator Beast Bestiari.

Earlier I mentioned Shuffle Reborn, and here's where it comes into play. Attacking with your Gladiator Beast monsters isn't the most reliable way of dealing with threats, a.k.a. fielding Gladiator Beast Gyzarus, so you'll need some way to throw another monster on the field. Shuffle Reborn does that for you and also has the added benefit of returning Serpentine Princess to the deck!

Now that you're going for a more aggro iteration of the deck you'll need more ways to field multiple monsters. Test Tiger's one of the better ways in a Gladiator Beast strategy, and combined with Elemental Hero Prisma, you'll have plenty of chances to easily summon Gladiator Beast Fusion Monsters.

To diversify your options, why not add in an Elemental HERO Shadow Mist and a Mask Change. No matter how many good Gladiator Beast combos you think you can make, I guarantee you there isn't a Gladiator Beast that acts as a one-sided Macro Cosmos. Springing Masked HERO Dark Law on your opponent may very well end the game.

As much as I wanted to put a million different cards in the deck, there isn't much else that meshes with Gladiator Beasts that can be leveraged off Serpentine Princess. You'll always have enough options with Gladiator Beast Murmillo and Test Tiger, and it felt underwhelming to add Predaplants. It was to the point that I felt I was just making a Link heavy deck weaker by adding Gladiator Beasts. Turns out, Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon's pretty easy to make when Serpentine Princess comes into play.

Since you can field a Gladiator Beast monster with relative ease, both Gladiator Beast Equeste and Gladiator Beast Bestiari are at your fingertips. Combined with Dragunity Phalanx, you have Dragunity Knight Vajrayana, which equips your Phalanx as a spell. In turn, you can Special Summon the Phalanx and make Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon.

As I said, there are many things you can do with Serpentine Princess, but if you're anchoring your whole plan specifically on triggering Serpentine Princess, I can almost guarantee you there are easier ways to summon whatever monster you want to use.

With all of that in mind, here are the final changes:

-1 Gladiator Beast Darius
-1 Gladiator Beast Equeste
-1 Gladiator Beast Bestiari
-1 Gladiator Beast Retiari
-1 Serpentine Princess
-1 Fusion Tag
-1 Gladiator Proving Ground
-3 Pot of Duality
-3 Solemn Strike
-3 Compulsory Escape Device

-1 Gladiator Beast Gyzarus
-1 Gladiator Beast Heraklinos
-1 Missus Radiant

+2 Elemental Hero Prisma
+1 Gladiator Beast Augustus
+3 Test Tiger
+1 Dragunity Phalanx
+1 Elemental HERO Shadow Mist
+2 Shuffle Reborn
+3 A Hero Lives
+1 Mask Change
+2 Instant Fusion
+1 Reinforcement of the Army

+1 Dragunity Knight Vajrayana
+1 Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon
+1 Masked HERO Dark Law

I started to have really wild thoughts involving Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm, Dragon Ravine, and Destrudo, the Lost Dragon's Frisson, but that turned out to really overcomplicate the initial setup. Gladiator Beasts quickly fell by the wayside and become completely pointless in those builds.

Here's the final list that focuses more on Gladiator Beasts instead.

Notes:

Gladiator Beast Andabata and Gladiator Beast Tamer Editor are surprisingly hard to capitalize on, but when you can do it, it's pretty much game over for your opponent. Sadly that won't be your central strategy, but try to squeeze in that combo every now and then when you can. It's worth it when you can pull it off.

Just remember: beat your opponents before they beat you.

Do you love winning with unconventional strategies? Do you love creating mash-ups? Does your deck need an injection of crazy? Send the following to rerouting.tcgplayer@gmail.com to have your deck featured in the “Re-Routing” deck fix column!

-Your Main and Extra Deck list. (No Side Deck needed, but please send a written deck list, not a screencap; screencapped deck lists will be filed and then burned in the furnace accordingly… and your deck should be TCG legal).

-Your name and city.

-Remember, please use full card names! Abbrevs and mis-sipllngs make Loukas' life sad. Try your darndest to get the TCG name on there.

-A paragraph or two describing your deck: what it does, why you're playing it, and its strengths and weaknesses. “Winning” is not a strategy per se, and neither is “beating your opponents before they beat you.”

-Your favorite card from the build and why – make me fall in love with the deck! The cooler your strategy the more I'll want to fix it, and if you throw in funny jokes, that'll surely get my attention too; be warned, unfunny jokes will push your deck to the back of the stack. Don't be afraid to get creative! New stuff takes priority, because I'm not bored of it yet! –LJP
